Purpose of Position
Design and build software, automation, and platform capabilities that modernize how database services are delivered and operated across NetJets. This role is intended for a software engineer with a strong passion for database technologies who wants to apply engineering practices to database platforms, tooling, reliability, and administration. The Software Engineer will create reusable services, APIs, pipelines, infrastructure-as-code modules, and self-service workflows while developing hands-on knowledge of database administration, performance, security, availability, backup and recovery, and production operations across on-premises and cloud environments.
Engineering Focus
The primary focus is engineering solutions for database platforms rather than performing repetitive administration manually. Database administration knowledge remains important because it provides the operational context needed to design safe automation, resilient services, and effective controls.
Tasks and Responsibilities
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support production-quality software and automation for database platform services.
• Build APIs, command-line tools, reusable libraries, infrastructure-as-code modules, and event-driven workflows that simplify database provisioning and lifecycle management.
• Create self-service capabilities for database requests such as provisioning, access, backup and recovery, refreshes, schema deployment, configuration changes, and decommissioning.
• Engineer CI/CD pipelines for database platform code and database changes, including automated testing, policy validation, security scanning, artifact management, approvals, and rollback controls.
• Automate database administration activities such as installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, backup validation, recovery testing, monitoring, compliance evidence, capacity management, and routine maintenance.
• Apply Git-based development, peer review, coding standards, automated testing, secure coding, observability, and software release practices to database tooling and services.
• Modernize database platforms through cloud adoption, managed database services, container and platform patterns, migration automation, standardized configurations, and retirement of legacy technologies.
• Improve reliability by engineering actionable telemetry, service-level indicators, dashboards, alerting, automated remediation, failure testing, and operational health checks.
• Use database administration knowledge to troubleshoot performance, availability, replication, backup and recovery, security, and production incidents, then convert recurring work into automation.
• Partner with application engineers, architects, security, cloud, infrastructure, and operations teams to define database service patterns and improve the developer experience.
• Create technical designs, engineering standards, architecture decisions, operational runbooks, support documentation, and measurable service outcomes.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and support NetJets global high-availability operations as necessary.
